Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C).

Combine the chopped dates, boiling water, and baking soda in a small bowl. Set aside to cool.

Cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy in a large mixing bowl. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.

Combine the flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a separate bowl.

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the creamed mixture, alternating with the milk. Stir until well combined.
